v26-2 The DAR honors historic preservation in Edgewater

Vol. XXVI No. 2 - SUMMER 2015

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will present the DAR Historic Preservation Medal to Kathy Gemperle, founding president of the Edgewater Historical Society, on June 13 at the Roosevelt Branch of the Chicago Public Library.

The award goes to individuals who have done extraordinary work in historic preservation over a long period of time. Members of the Culper Ring Agent 355 Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution are proud to recognize Kathy’s work with the Edgewater Historical Society and the Lakewood Balmoral Historic District.

Kathy’s efforts in historic preservation began in the early 1980s with historic walking tours and educational programs about neighborhood history that she brought to various neighborhoods in Edgewater. For 27 years she has chaired the Edgewater Historical Society Home Tour, which features a different neighborhood each year with a focus on history and preservation of historic homes. Kathy has commented “All my efforts in preservation have focused on a sense of community and a sense of place that community history gives to all its residents. I am thrilled to be honored in this way for the work that I love doing in Edgewater.”
