Gardening Grant

Vol. XVI No. 1 - SPRING 2005

By: Sandee Remis

The Edgewater Historical Society gardeners were overjoyed to be accepted for the Comprehensive Assistance offered through Greencorps Chicago, a program of the City of Chicago Department of Environment in partnership with WRD Environmental. Greencorps helps community groups build gardens from scratch or make major renovations to an existing garden. Sandra Remis, Elisabeth Szegho and Kathy Gemperle attended a series of 4-hour workshops in February and March where they learned site assessment method, volunteer stewardship, basic design principles, planning techniques and a variety of horticultural skills.

Greencorps provides technical assistance through a horticulturist assigned to our group and resources such as tools, plants and soil, as well as up to four days of work by a Greencorps crew when installation occurs, sometime in September. The EHS garden committee need at least four new members who will commit to helping with this exciting project, as well as the normal planting and maintenance of our garden beginning in April and May. Please contact Sandee Remis if you can help.
